Atomic Register

Between 1945 and 1963 the United States detonated more than two hundred nuclear devices in the atmosphere — over Pacific atolls, in the Nevada desert, in the upper atmosphere above the South Atlantic. Each has a name. This is the register.
The register includes a small number of subsurface tests in which containment failure resulted in the unintended venting of radioactive particulate matter and fission products into the atmosphere. These events are marked accordingly.

319 tests. 1 with photographs in the collection.

  1. Baneberry ⚹ accidental atmospheric release — 666th US nuclear test

United States atmospheric and surface nuclear tests, 1945–1963. Sources: Nuclear Weapon Archive; Oklahoma Geological Survey Observatory Nuclear Explosion Catalog (Lawson, 1996); US Department of Energy. The Partial Test Ban Treaty was signed 5 August 1963. ⚹ marks accidental atmospheric releases from underground tests.
